The Hawkeye State can make for a fun, low-key vacation. The midwestern state of Iowa has a variety of historical, cultural and entertainment attractions that will keep everybody in your family happy. From exploring Dutch heritage to viewing the world's largest bull, a memorable vacation awaits you in Iowa.

The Amana Colonies is a historic landmark that was founded as a religious commune in the 1800s. Explore these authentic German villages, where antiques, furniture, clocks and local beer can be found. For another cultural experience, visit Pella, a town which celebrates Dutch heritage. Everything about the town is Dutch, from the windmill and the canal to the unique architecture. Entering Pella is like stepping into the Netherlands without having to leave the country.

One of the state's most interesting attractions is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, which occupies over 2,500 acres. These prehistoric mounds were created by the Eastern Woodland Indians beginning around 500 B.C. Although mounds are typically found throughout the region, these mounds are unique because they were carefully constructed to represent a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals. Among the 195 mounds, 31 are effigies.
